Hi all,
Quick version of my question:
is it possible for the check engine light to come on, and flash an error code, without any error message being "visible" to a test computer? My car is a 1989 9000 2.0L non-turbo. I've seen a post that suggests the knock sensor can cause the light to flash, but not produce a normal error code that's stored in the main ECU and readable by a test computer.
Now for the long version!
The check engine light on my 1989 9000 (2.0L non-turbo) occasionally comes on, under heavy load, and then when the foot isn't on the accelerator it gives a four flash error code. If the car is turned off and restarted, the light does not come back on. This suggests that the code isn't "stored" anywhere in the system.
My car is currently with a Saab specialist workshop, to work out why it's stalled a few times and then won't restart. It's several minutes up to a couple of hours before it will go again. Now, the check engine light actually came on when the mechanic was driving the car and he plugged the computer in, with the light still flashing, and no messages came out. He interpreted this to mean that the computer couldn't communicate with the ECU, meaning that the ECU itself may be failing.
I'm hoping this isn't right, as it sounds expensive! I've seen one post on this bb that says the EZK knock sensor in at least some models will make the light flash, without storing a code in the ECU that could be read by the test computer. I would have thought, though, that if the light was flashing, the computer would be able to see something?
From looking at this bb, I think the four flashes means 1) Coolant Temperature Sensor problem, or 2) Knock Sensor problem. Option 2 would be much nicer, as it would fit in with it happening under heavy load, and the code not being stored.
Can anyway say for certain what the four flash code means for this model (1989 9000 2.0L non-turbo)? And if this code should be stored in the ECU/readable by a test computer?
Thanks in anticipation!
Joe
