Your 89 should be the same as my 88, equipped with the LH2.4 fuel injection (which will store codes) and the EZK ignition control, which uses the same check engine light (and does not store codes). The EZK displays the codes while driving,The LH 2.4 just turns the light on. A fault in the EZK will flash the light while off idle (4 flashes represents a loss of signal from the knock sensor) and put the light on constant at idle. I had the same symptoms in my 88, cleaning the connections at the knock sensor fixed it. The sensor can be DIY tested, You need a digital voltmeter. you hook the digital voltmeter to the 2 terminals on the sensor (easier sad than done, I know)and set on the most sensitive AC volt range. Take the plastic handle of a long screwdriver and place it on the sensor. Hit the tip of the screwdriver with a hammer, you should see a voltage generated by the sensor. This is basically it from the factory manual. The next step is to test the same reading at the terminals of the computer, located under the drivers seat of my 88, not 100% sure in a 89. you can test the wires from the computer to the sensor also, its two wires inside a shield. The C900 with LH 2.4 had a recall for the sensor wires, have not heard of many problems in the 9k, but it could happen.
