These cars have hydraulic problems. The slave cylinder is notorious but I replaced a perfectly good one not realizing that all of my problems were in neither the master or slave but just the line itself. Between the master and slave the line is partially metal and partially rubber with a braided covering. This rubber section becomes porous and begins to take on air. Pressure bleed the system before you do ANYTHING else! If that fixes the pedal, it will probably be temporary but replacing that line is the next step. You need to have a properly working clutch before making any conclusions regarding the condition of the transmission if you're going by smoothness of shift as the determinator.

117K is not much mileage on these transmissions. At least that's the case with the manual. Not so with the auto. Swapping is possible but best done when you have an entire donor car available as there are several parts you'll probably miss. Reliability on the automatics is probably half that (or less) than the manual. I hear 135K as a typical service life figure. You need to want that auto mighty badly to voluntarily reduce the reliability of your car. Chances are excellent IMO, that you don't have any transmission problems any way - - just the clutch. And if it isn't slipping, it's not the clutch itself; just the hydraulic system. (Saabs get long life out of a clutch, typically.) If your pedal isn't staying on the floor and it isn't eating fluid, you may not even have to pull the transmission to fix this. Others will tell you more.
