So it seems that the trick is getting the right replacement guide. From memory, the guides in the engine I worked on had a metal backing, and those definately would not bend. Or at least work after bending. I would guess that to remove a metal-backed one, you would need to cut part of it away so that it would clear the slot in the head. No big deal with a saw or dremel, just watch the chips. Maybe it could be bent up with a couple of pliers to get it out.
