MAF Cleaning - what is "clean" Posted by Bill Homer [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Oops, forgot to say..., Yaofeng, Sat, 31 Jan 2004 18:43:27 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I don't know what kind of MAF Sensor or AMM that Volvo uses, but if you didn't clean it when you examined it, I wouldn't rule it out as the source of the problem. My other car is an normally aspirated Audi A4 V6, which uses a Hitachi MAF. This device is actually a type of printed circuit with microscopic heated runners on a substrate, and the runners can easily get dirty with minute particles, i.e. oil, which are almost impossible to see - particularly on cursory examination in frigid conditions! Several people on an Audi website have noted that they destroyed their MAFs by running K&N filters straight out of the box - giving off oily particles - and someone actually posted a scan from a very high power (electron?) microscope showing the damage.
If you haven't yet, I'd give it a shot of electronic or brake cleaner to ensure that it is really clean. In any case, you are off the hook for this year due to the $450 expenditure rule.
By the way, if you are planning on changing the caliper yourself, you might want to give it a shot of penetrating oil now where the brake hose/pipe attaches, give it time to work. I ran into a corroded connector there on my old SAAB 900, which caused quite a chase looking for a compatible part after I rounded off the nut.
