I have a 1992 Saab 9000 with 210,000 miles on it. Several months ago I noticed a vibration at about 45 mph when exiting a highway. The noise was entirely speed dependent. I took it to the shop for diagnosis and was told that it was an internal transmission bearing. I had my transmission rebuilt and at the same time got both lower ball joints, control arm bushings, upper motor mounts replaced. When I got the car back, the noise was still there, same as before. A few weeks later, I got new front tires (snows) and had one of the recently replaced ball joints replaced again because of some free play. The noise continued.
A few weeks after that, the same ball joint failed causing my wheel to fall off. When I took it to the shop to have everything reassembled, they found that the bolt that holds the joint together was missing and they noted that I had a loose tie rod end and that the control arm supports were all broken.
I just had those items fixed, and I still have the same speed dependent noise between 35-45 mph which is a low growling noise. It is present in turns to both sides as well as when driving straight. It is also present whether the car is in gear or coasting. At higher speeds (65mph) the noise becomes rythmic and slightly higher pitched.
I am at wits end with this vibration and I can't think of what it could be. Motor mounts would be a possibility except that it is not dependent on engine speed.
Has anyone had any similar pesky vibrations or have any idea what it could be? I'm looking for good news, as I've obviously sunk a lot of money into the car recently.
Thanks in advance for any help/advice/support.
