...it does SOUND like a head gasket. Any smell of coolant in the exhaust? Any oil appearing in the coolant (look in the reservoir)?
Can't speak for the safety of running the car. I wouldn't for long, but only because I prefer peace-of-mind over speculation.
You don't HAVE to remove the chains when removing the head, but in all honesty, if you're going to take the head off, now's the best time to do the chains, guides, tensioners and sprockets, since it's a HELL of a lot easier to get the timing cover back on while the head is off. Also, I disconnected the exhaust ABOVE the turbo and removed the manifold still attached to the head.
As for why the head gasket replacement is so costly, it's the man-hours associated with the job, not the parts.
As for some sites with info, try:
-- townsendimports(for the C900, but similar steps)
-- quasimotors (although no head gasket procedures there)
