I have just picke my head up from the local amchine shop where it was milled down to flat. It had not warped, but the typical head-gasket gouges were in it, so I had it smoothed up. Also, I had an exhaust stud break in it, so they did that as well.
This was my first time tearing my 9000 down, and it went smoothly, but not without the learning experiences involved in such ventures. You'll need a full set of metric wrenches and sockets. The head bolts are "E18" inverted bolts, and a simple extension (4-6"?) on your new torque wrench ought to work fine. The timing chain tensioner requires a 26mm (1-1/16" will do the trick as well) to removie the housing.
I left my timing chain on the car, but did remove the cam sprockets.
I'll be putting it back together this weekend. As usual, I could do it in less than half the time if I were to do it again.
I ordered the gasket kit from eeuroparts, as well as new head bolts.
I have some experience working on cars, but I usually have the luxury working under a lift with a plethora and a half of tools available (my brother works at an indy shop specializing in European (BMW primarily) cars, so I learned in a great environment. This last job I tackled in my own garage, since it wouldn't be quick, and you don't need to get under the car a lot.
Firs thing to do is take the passenger side front wheel well housing off, then go to town on it.
Feel free to ask questions (via email?). I have some digital pictures of the procedure.
Good luck. It's always fun doing these things, if you have the time and will.
