Odd Noise (Crank Pulley?)

OK, first off, I am not mechanically inclined, but I have learned a little over the years from this board as well as from getting my '89 fixed by my indie Saab mechanic.
Last summer, on my annual checkup from said indie, he said my 'crank pulley' was showing signs of wear. He said it wasn't critical, but something to keep an eye on. Up until yesterday, I've had no problems.
Yesterday I was driving down the road and noticed an occasion shreak coming from under the hood, however the car in general was running fine. I pulled over, popped the hood, and noticed the noise in question was coming from what I THINK is the crank pulley. It's just to the right of the coolant resovoir, with a belt that goes around it. Is this the crank pulley? Anyways, whatever it is, it seems to have periodical difficulty circulating properly. In that, it gets stuck, then begins to move again, then gets stuck, then moves again.
Since I noticed the problem, it will make the noise for awhile, then it will be fine. Very intermitent.
Any ideas? The only other thing I thought of was perhaps the compressor is begining to die, but the AC works fine.
Obviously, I need to get it looked at soon. But am I risking damage to the car by continuing to drive with this problem?
