In earlier 9000s, there were two belts: one main serpentine belt to drive the engine accessories (water pump, alternator, steering pump) and a separate one to drive the AC compressor.
Sounds like the compressor is stiffening up and will seize one of these days. As long as it turns, it will continue doing its work, so you're not going to notice a change in A/C performance necessarily.
If the unit should seize up, you can remove the A/C belt without causing harm elsewhere, and drive it like that for as long as you like before repairing the compressor. Or, forego the compressor forever!
