I don't know if this is similar, but my parents' '92 9000S has a sunroof that "sticks" when you retract it. The seal on the rear edge catches a little of the cars roof. It usually works fine after a second attempt (push the button to slide it forward, and the roof "clicks" into the flat positon, the push the switch to slide it back.)
If this doesn't work, it can always be operated if someone pushes down on the back of the sliding portion from above when the switch is pushed to slide it back.
I had an '89 BMW that I put a power sunroof into (Replaced the manual one with the motor unit) and it confused itself sometimes, thinking it was "up" when it was in fact closed flat. I solved this by pushing the button to the "up" direction a couple of times before I tried to retract it again.
It is also possible that the fixtures which pull the roof slipped past a 'cog' on the cable, putting it out of alignment from one side to another.
