So, as I have grown-up, I've always heard that it is a good idea to give a turbo a small cool-down time after driving by letting the car idle for a short time after driving, before turning the car off. This theory seems to me to make perfect sense, especially considering the speeds at which turbos spin.
Anyway, I do let my '93 Aero idle for a short time (I'm lucky because I coast to my house for the last 1/2 mile or so, giving me the perfect oportunity to let the car idle.) I do it most of the time I park the car anywhere else though too.
Can anyone give me the reasons that this bit of turbo care came about? Or correct or add to the reasons I came up with below?
It makes sense to me to do it to:
1. Let the turbo run at lower speeds and dissipate heat before it stops (let the water take that high temp down to something less extreme)
2. Let the oil circulating in the turbo be replenished in a no-load situation (also in the interest of temperature. . . removing heat from the oil, rather than letting oil that is really hot stay in the turbo housing)
I know that heat transfer is a serious issue and that once a car is turned off, the heat transfer mechanisms in the car are arrested (Cooling, and even oil systems). This can cause very high temps (That's why the Aux fan comes on after you turn your car off on certain days)
Anyway, any input is appreciated. I'm the type that likes to know what's going on, AND WHY!
Thanks,
~Peter
