The tradition began in the before time, before there were water cooled turbos. So yes, now we have water AND oil cooled turbos, just like the rest of the engine. I'm not a turbo expert, but when you're not under load (idling and/or coasting) the turbine shouldn't be spinning, or only very slowly, as the compressor isn't exposed to the pumping exh gasses full-time. So the cooling benefits are twofold, at least. Much reduced super hot exh gasses, and oil and water circulating, which are both also going to be getting cooler, because you're not under load. The primary reason is to avoid cooking the oil that stays in the housing after a hot shut down, and ending up with carbon in your housing, which will shorten your bearing life. Yes, oils are a lot better than they were 20 years ago, which is a great thing, but the point is still to avoid running it hard and putting it away hot and wet, so a brief idle time is a good thing.
I always used to coast to my parking space, too! Now I have to ease up the driveway and into the garage, ahh the price of progress.
