I faced the same dilemma a few years ago. My solution hasn't been tested in a real crash, but I think it's a good one.
I assume you're trying to secure the top of the seat from forward motion. I did that by buying a padlock fixture at a hardware store. I don't know the real name for it, but it's what would be attached to a door or a fence gate. It's about1 1/2 inches square, and attaches to the back of the back seat with four wood screws. It has a loop of steel that allows you to attach a child-seat tether's clip. It's a robust system, maybe not as strong as SAAB would have built it if they had thought of the need, but since the tether strap turns 90 degrees over the seat back, there's plenty of friction between the tether belt and the seat to soak up forces even before the buckle takes any strain. It's a neat setup that doesn't intrude on trunk space.
That's the short-term parent's solution. In several years, though, you'll face my current problem. Your kid will weigh more than the 40 lbs your child seat is rated for. By law, your only obvious choice is to move the kid into a booster seat and use the car's shoulder belts, which are there only on the right and left side seating positions. I ask the regulators, is my child really safer in a side position with a two-point belt? I look at the high-ridin' SUV's that clot my city's roads, speeding though intersections, and say, "uh-uh". For now, she's still in her old seat, in the middle. A different car is in my future, with a center shoulder harness..
