Just visited with my indie mechanic about this one, and we're all stumped. We all believe that the symptoms I describe below are not indicative of anything serious.
-- Getting a weird friction-like noise near the rear brake calipers/back edge of the caliper. Sort of sounds like small marbles in rhythmic pattern, and the pattern repeats itself faster if the wheel spins faster. Scrsh, scrsh, scrsh, scrsh.
-- Bearings seem fine. No play in the wheels.
-- Rotors are fine -- and they are relatively new, cross-drilled Zimmermans.
-- Calipers are not sticking.
-- New wheels and tires on the car -- aftermarket. They are NOT rubbing anywhere.
-- NO noise on the front wheels, only the back.
-- No smell of overheating or anything.
-- Wheels spin freely.
-- We've ruled out that there's something in the tires, since the problem is the same for both rear wheels.
We were thinking that perhaps the rear ABS sensors might be making the noise. Doesn't seem to be related to noise from the rotors and pads. The only other thing we could think of is that perhaps the hubs are making noise, but it's weird that BOTH are doing the SAME thing.
I know it's a shot in the dark, but has anyone else ever had this problem? Going on an 8.5-hour trip tomorrow, so didn't want to take any chances. My mechanic and I feel it should be okay.
Thanks for your thoughts and help!
