I agree on the battery. It probably is dead.
I can tell you some of the information since I tested it:
- Starting voltage at battery: 11.5-12V
- Voltage at battery at idle w/no load: 13-13.5V
- Revving for a bit causes voltage to jump up a bit to about 13.6V and then it settles back down to where it was.
- Voltage at battery at idle w/heavy load (lights, blower, door ajar, brakes on): Keeps dropping to the 10's. I shut off car before letting it drop more.
The thing that eliminates the battery from the picture for me is the fact that voltage drops with heavy load with the car running. Since the alternator has now taken over, I'm suspect of that system. So I'm really confused now. I thought the VR would be shot, but the brushes are 11mm. Could the VR circuitry be shot somehow? Or do alternators go bad in this fashion? I don't know anything about this history of this car before my ownership, but the alternator has a Bosch rebuilt sticker on it.
Any more help? Thanks
Karthik
