Unless something is about to fly apart, it's very hard to determine where the sound is coming from. I have a piece of heater hose (about 1" dia), about 20" long. Hold one end to your ear, and move the other end around the engine compartment. Hint- avoid sticking it in anything rotating. This acts as a very crude non-contact stethescope, and does a very good job of helping to isolate noise. If you suspect a particular item, and that item isn't rotating, stick a wooden dowel on it and hold your ear next to the dowel (Do Not stick it in your ear [my lawyer told me to say that]). Just be very careful - don't let the dowel slip into anything spinning.
The next Killer App for the Internet will be a way to diagnose engine sounds over the BB.
