The TCS goes through a check every time ignition key is cycled. If the problem is not there the light goes out and car goes out of limp home.
That's why many people can cycle the key and get the car to drive for a little while until the problem occur again.
The fault code is stored in memory though.
If the problem is present, the car goes into LHM as soon as the engine is started.
Stored fault codes and more important failed calibrations can linger in the system and create problems.
I have read many times here how the mechanic tells the owner that this car can't be calibrated and that car doesn't have that function and so on.
