Ok, I'll go ahead and say it... Posted by AMG [Email] (#3110) [Profile/Gallery] (more from AMG) on Tue, 13 Apr 2004 10:51:40 In Reply to: thinking about buying a '91 9000 S, Iain, Tue, 13 Apr 2004 08:31:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This is unpopular to say maybe, but the answer is no, Saab 9000's aren't cheap to maintain, they aren't super-reliable, and the parts can be quite expensive if you buy from the wrong place.
What they offer is a unique blend of safety, perfomance, utility, and efficiency (gas mileage and overall longevity) that is very hard to match. (without buying a new Saab, of course).
If you aren't a car guy, maybe there's a better choice for you in a Japanese or American car. If you never drive on the highway, I know you won't appreciate what a 9000 has to offer. Also, a 9000 S has the downside but not nearly the same upside of a turbo car. (The S denotes non-turbo).
Now all that being said, if you like to tinker a little bit and you're willing to buy parts from the internet or junkyards, then a 9000 doesn't have to kill your wallet. I fixed the last three issues I've had with the help of this board. Saabnet saves people money all the time.
Let me leave you with this thought: before my first Saab 9000, I had a '91 Corolla. I spent $500 on it over two years. I bought a '93 9000 Aero last October, in less than a year, I've spent $2200 on repairs. Would I go back, do I regret my purchase? Nope, not for a second. I'm a car guy, and a Saab nut.;-)
Good Luck -AMG
