then go from there. All freon will leak over time which is why the R12 which is bad for the environment was abolished. You can try several Hydro Carbons [HC's] which will work well without any changes in system oil type or convert it to 134a by flushing the system [component removal] adding a new accumulator/drier, etc... R12 is still available cheap enough, try eBay :) The costs to convert according to how much you use your a/c will not be justifiable. Be sure to pull a vacuum, check to see how long it holds a vacuum which also will indicate how severe a leak is. Systems low on charge will leak faster. It could be a simple o-ring or even a compressor seal, neither is to expensive. BTW: where in NC? maybe I can help?
