R12 is reasonable enough still, even cheap at times such as on eBay. The costs to convert are ridiculous. Depends on how severe a leak you have but a good vacuum will ive you a better idea. Auto Zone will loan you a vacuum pump but for minimal $ or free a good independent shop [not necessarily an a/c shop] will hook up and pull a vacuum to check it. The longer it can stay hooked up to a good vacuum pump the better. If empty for any length of time I'd install a new accumulator/drier at minimum and a few ounces of oil compatable with whatever freon you choose to use. HC's are relatively cheap like EnviroSafe ~ check ebay and a vacuum is not required so for minimal $ [$30] you could be getting cold air from the vents. If you know nothing about a/c then leave it to someone who does. One mess up and you could severely injure yourself or others due to the high pressures. I have the tools and gauges even a few cans of R12 hanging around and a working knowledge of a/c systems. I'm about 4 hours from you so not much help to you. Talk to the local guys at the NAPA parts counter [none of the cheap chain type auto parts places] who might have some gauges and a little free time after work. A lot of small older independent shops have the knowledge and tools just ask around. Working around a/c is nothing to take lightly. I've got a 1985 Saab 900 with EnviroSafe in it for 3 years and blowing ice cold. It was empty for almost 2 years when I all I did was add about 4 oz of esther oil and charge 2-1/2 cans of EnviroSafe into it without even pulling a vacuum. It's good stuff, alot of controversy from some but I've used it several times as a cheap alternative with great success. There is no cure all for a bad compressor, holes, etc... I never add anything that has a leak detector, sealer, etc... in it. It will end up costing you much more in the long run. Best of luck!
