A couple of things could be going on here.

The first - do you notice this more at low rpm (under 2K) or higher rpm (2.5K or up)? The AC compressor takes energy to turn, and a compressor that's old and sticky takes a lot of guts to get moving. At low rpm the engine has less power, and you can definately feel the engagement of the compressor. This could also be a sign of a compressor on the way out, sad to say. But not definately. At higher rpm the engine has more power, and the effect less noticeable.

As to the blinking - the compressor clutch does take some decent current to get moving, but it's still way less than engine starting. I doubt the issue is the battery/alternator not being able to provide enough juice. But it can still be electrical. I'd have to dig into a schematic, but two possibilities come to mind. The first is the feed side. I'll bet the AC compressor is on the same switched voltage bus as the fuel injection. That comes off a relay. If the contacts of that main relay are getting pitted, or there is a poor connection in that path, the current pull of the AC clutch could momentarily pull down the voltage bus on the clutch side of the bad connection. That would momentarily drop the fuel injection voltages, causing an engine hiccup. The other possiblity is a shared ground point between the AC clutch and fuel injection system. Again, high current for the AC clutch would 'lift' the ground point. Either way the result is the same - less voltage available for the FI. Yes, this is very similar to alternator/battery, but you'd need to look in other areas.

Get yourself the electrical manual for your car. I'll try and remember to peek through my manuals this weekend and see if I come up with anything. What year car are we talking about here?
