You need to have the right tools to do the job. There are no tricks.
For lining up the trans input shaft, the so called trick is put the transmission in neutral before attempting it. You will be lining up the trans input shaft and the itermediate shaft out of the differential at the same time. Putting the trans in neutral allows both shafts to be free spinning so they won't bind the respective mating part.
