My experience with this (2 heater cores in my '88 since '97) is that the coolant level is usually down when you do the job ("check coolant level" on). My driveway is not level. Just put the tail of the car a bit higher than the front (use ramps if necessary) and you won't loose hardly a drop. At least that's been my experience. The reason they talk about the older cars being harder is that the intake manifold is a bit in the way. Moving it by either removal or tilting the engine forward helps muchly.
