Actually, there is an adjustment. How do I know? Because when our 92 had the clutch slave replaced, it came back misaligned. I'm not sure whether that could cause your problem.
In my case it, the problem was that when you moved the lever to the left for 1st or 2nd, it was clearly running into something and being stopped in its movement.
There is a pinch bolt in the linkage near where it comes through the firewall. You can loosen this and adjust the alignment. I do not remember the exact procedure-- I forget whether it's on the Townsend site, or whether I found it in the Haynes manual. I do recall that the procedure changed at some point. I forget what year. Sorry.
Still, I don't think this would affect you getting into 4th. 3rd and 4th should be relatively unaffected by shifter problems. I do know there is a ball mechanism in the transmission that prevents you from engaging more than one gear at a time. I'm not sure how you could end up with a problem there, but if you did it could prevent you from getting to 4th.
