hmmm.... 48,000 miles, new purchase, new clutch, bad synchro...
If the previous owner left you with a bad clutch after 48,000 miles, I can understand why you need a new synchro. These clutches routinely go at least twice that long (depending how much highway driving you do).
If the P.O. ruined the clutch that fast, they may have been torturing the synchro too. The other possibility is the clutch was not fully disengaging, which could wear out a transmission (and a clutch) fast. Did you notice any shifting problems before?
