If the boot hasn't been torn for a long time and it hasn't been driven long too then you might still be able to use the old joint and replace only the boot.

Key thing here is that the CV is not too rusted and there is no excessive play.

Take the CV out of car and separate it from the shaft (plenty writings on this).

Disassembe the CV joint, don't be afraid of your hands getting dirty! Wiggle the inner part and balls release/come out one by one. Then the inner part and the ring can be taken out. It is easier to work on balls that are opposite to each other. Avoid turning the innner part too much as the balls / ring might get a bit stuck and you might need tools. In normal case the disassembly can be done without any tools.

Clean and wash the inner part, ring, outer part and balls in a solvent. If you want to risk yor health a bit use ordinary petrol/gasoline). Better and maybe not so harmful is diesel fuel.

Let parts dry a bit.

Assemble the CV, it requires a skillful wiggling around (with opposite balls again!), but is relatively easy. Put in new MOS2 grease, but don't overfill. Quality CV boots (for example Löbro) normally come with new bands and grease.

Put the new boot on the axle, insert CV, tighten the bands and re-assembe the rest.

I've done this several times on my CV's and I'm stil having the original ones (w/ more than 360k km)... Takes approx 2-3 hours to do this...

Remember to use a veeeery long breaker bar when opening the center nut on the wheel hub. I'm doing it so that I have the wheel in place. After the nut is loose I'll take the wheel off and lift the car.
