My opinion on rebuilt axles. Posted by Gene N [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: My $.02= change axle...., David Ingram, Thu, 6 May 2004 06:53:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've gone through three rebuilt axles in 6 months on an old Acura beater I keep around. Each time the parts place gave me another one under warranty, but the hassle of taking them out and dragging them back to the store made me finally buy a new CV joint (to put on the last rebuilt axle!).
I think that the "rebuilding" process consists of dumping the axle in a cleaning tank, repacking the joints, and putting new boots on. Oh, and throw a new axle nut in the box. Do the math. That $65 rebuilt axle has new CV boot ($10), a new inner boot ($25), a nut ($4), and at least 15 minutes of labor ($10 with overhead). That comes out to $49 by my calculations. A new CV joint is $100, and as far as I know, once one is worn, there is not much recoverable.
If you get a good one, well then, good for you. But I don't think I'll be going down that road again.
