I have to agree with Ari's thought that the cause is the one-way PCV valve, but it could very well be shot, not just installed backwards (it has probably never been touched). An easy test is to disconnect the end of the hose near the valve cover, then carefully blow and suck on this hose (try to act presidential and "don't inhale"). Blowing towards the throttle body should offer no resistance, sucking should be blocked. This is a fairly cheap part and is easily replaced. While you're at it, you may want to replace some of the vacuum hoses, they probably need it.
