The joy of owning a 10 year old SAAB...

(actually I have two, a 94cs and 94cs turbo, both 5 spd) is there is fair amount of work to keep them in good running shape. Especially if you are living in New Jersey, where the government enforces a fairly strigent vehicle inspection program.
Today I put my 94cs through the bi-annual event of State vehicle inspection. It has a blinking SRS light, and the battery would drain if I leave it in the garage for over a week. Both of these defects are none safety related. Little did I know the trouble I am getting into.
It failed three items: emissions, headlight, and exhaust leak. The passenger side headlight lens has a 1/2 inch crack but none penetrating. Actually it has been like this for the past five years. I don't know why the State suddenly picks it up now. In any rate I guess I have to shell out $210 to get one from Eeurope parts. The exhaust leak I found was between the flange of the cat and the mid-muffler. So that is easy to take care of. Now the fun part, emissions. Here are the readings:
NOx 1,672 vs. 937 permitted
HC 38 vs. 124 permitted
CO% 0.02 vs. 0.69 permitted
CO2% 13.3
O2% 1.5
Two years ago this car failed Nox also. My remedy was replacing the spark plugs because the tips of the old plugs have been eroded away. I don't think it'll happen again in two years but that's the first thing I'll check. I'll also need you combution experts out there to get your heads together and give me some advice.
Tonight I spent the better part of it replacing both rear brake pads, rotors and calipers of my other 94cs turbo. The process was uneventful but I wonder if I spent too much time in my garage. Would it be different if I own a Honda? Nah..I would be bored if I do.
