As I was backing up into garage, the car jerked, the clutch got stuck fully depressed, and then to my horror the car continued to back up even though I was pressing the brake to stop it. Mercifully, it stopped (engine died) before the rear end would have hit the garage opening (my aim was off). After correcting my aim, I re-started the car with the clutch stuck fully depressed and gear shift stuck in reverse. The car immediately backed up into the garage even though I was pressing the brake. This time, I think that by turning off the engine I was able to stop the car before it hit the rear garage wall. Later, with the engine off, somehow I was able to shift into neutral.

I found that the rubber clutch hose coming from the master cylinder got disconnected from the metal tube going to the slave cylinder (photo below). How could this happen?

Should I just try to reconnect them now? (I assume that it will be necessary to bleed the system.) Or should I replace...the metal tube? the rubber hose? the master cylinder? all of the above? There is no leakage in the footwell area below the MC.

How to explain why I could not seem to stop the car with the brakes when the clutch was stuck fully depressed and the gear shift was stuck in reverse? I assume the clutch was stuck engaged, but is reverse gear more powerful than the brakes? Or is this an indication of brake failure as well ? A breach in the clutch hydraulic system should not also cause brake failure even though clutch and brake system share the same fluid and reservoir, should it?

By the way, this (80,000 miles) is the third time there has been clutch failure. The first time was when the car was brand new (master cylinder replaced). Then when it was 3 yrs. old (MC and hose replaced).
