Sudden starter solenoid (?) electrical problem?

Hi.
Went to start my 1991 9000s and all electrical activity was dead. No central lock or anything.
Tested the battery and it was flat as a pancake, started fine the day before and no battery warning light or anything so it has flatened completely in under 18 hours.
Put a new battery on, and just got a faint recurring click from the starter. (ie. turn key and hold, click, click, click, release key)
Tried working the car backand forwards in gear to free starter but to no avail.
Cleaned the contacts on the solenoid (in situe), put ANOTHER battery on with a full charge and started OK, re-tested and starts fine now.
So my question is:-
Is it really likely that the problem was just the contacts or is there likely to be something else that explains the sudden battery drain?
I havent done the extra ford solenoid piggy back, should I? Would this have helped?
