It's designed to run on 87 octane gas, so the only question is whether the equipment that makes low octane gas safe is functioning. If you hear no pinging, which should be expected, that's a good sign.
What's the boost regulation like on the 87 octane? Are you getting lower and tapering boost compared to what you get with high octane gas? That should be the only potential difference, although my 9k is fairly insensitive to fuel octane.
