Sadly I have never visited the US so am unable to comment on your train systems. For us here in the UK, what we have now is a major backward step to 50 years ago, in those days there were shorter journey times due to the express trains using the mainlines and the local / slow trains having independent lines often away from the main lines. A guy called Dr Beeching decided it would be a great move to close all the smaller lines and move everything to the mainline. A misguided move at best. After several years the amount of traffic exceeded the line capacity and realisation dawned that his actions were more than a bit silly. By this time most of the lines for the slow trains had been taken up and sold for scrap hence the poor infrastucture we are now suffering from.
If my previous post appeared terse, I apologise as it was not meant to be ;-)
My mate is from indianapolis, he grew up there, now living in DC, our office is in Springfield.
