A lot of major parts are usually due for replacing in the neighborhood of 100k miles. You'll be on one end or the other of some major stuff.
Service records are important! If you get one with really low mileage, you'll probably be able to go a while before replacing any of the major stuff. If the car has over 100K, chances are, it's had most of the stuff on the list above replaced, so it's as good as a car with really low mileage (but MUCH cheaper!).
To give you an example, I got my car at 125k, with the previous owner having bought it at about 70k. Between 70k and 125k, he spent well over $3000 (I have the receipts). I've had the car for 6 months and have only spent about $200 on exhaust stuff, with nothing major in the near future.
Regardless of what you buy, set aside at least $1000 for any unexpected stuff, especially if its history is unknown. It may seem like a lot, but where else can you get the luxury, safety, reliability, cargo room, and DIY-friendlyness of a 9000 for just a few thousand bucks?
