An inch?? I replaced my chain at 155000 and I could pull the chain up about a centimeter, and it was making a lot of noise. The cam sprockets along with all the other sprockets, should not have rounded edges on the teeth or be able to see that they are worn at a glance. An inch of slack is a huge amount. By loose chain guide pieces you mean the slides? In pieces? Removable? The only way that you wouldn't need all the pieces for a proper timing chain replacement is if you are going to get rid of the car when it dies and only want the chain to be quiet until it does. My car ran too with the original chain. I was having some performance problems, but it ran. The past couple people who's chains I've replaced also had the same thing. One guy decided that he didn't want to replace the chain because it was too hard to do himself and too expensive for me to fix. Not a good idea. Replaceing only what "looks like it needs to be replaced" is like replacing half your windshield with a crack in it. Yeah it works, but it's ultimately something not quite right.
Besides, doing a whole timing chain replacement is a great way to learn a lot about your engine, and feel good about yourself for a difficult job well done. And as long as you placed the oil pickup tube correctly back onto the oil pump, don't worry about the lifter Knock, it'll go away.
Good Luck with it!
