Hi Peter,
Here's my whole SAAB story *grin*
As it happens, I bought my car in earily April 2004 from LesH, who is a regular on this board. I was driving a 1991 C900 non-turbo before, which was quickly dying, due to horrendous abuse and neglect by its first owner. On a whim one day, looking for ideas, I popped "saab club vancouver" into Google and found the website for the Saab Club of Western Canada, ran by SaabKen. I met Les on there. He had been trying to sell his Aero for a number of months. The idea of owning an Aero had not crossed my mind, since I figured they'd be far too expensive to even bother dreaming about. Faced with the fact that I'd be dumping many a G note into the 900 were I to keep it, I decided I didn't want to spend the money on a car that didn't really satisfy me. It was a base 900, cloth interior, no turbo, no sunroof, etc etc. I wanted the toys. So I was looking at 900 Turbos/SPGs. It became clear that to get a nice one of those I'd be spending about the same a Les was asking for his Aero. On the first meet I attended, SaabKen was kind enough to let me test-drive his 9000CSET, which got me hooked on the 9000s. From there, I went and test drove a '95 Aero at a dealer (with no intention to buy - just to get an idea of the difference) and fell head over heels... had a couple of long phone calls with Les about the car, scrambled to get the $$$ together, and bam - bought the car off Les. It had just under 170,000kms on it when Les got here to Vancouver from Winnipeg.
I won't bore you with all the details on the car since you've probably heard it all from Les! There are a few big-ticket items that do worry me a bit - it's on its original clutch at nearly 175,000kms - on the bright side, this means it's never been abused, and supports the fact that it's been primarily a highway car. The head gasket hasn't been done either, but it seems like the cooling system has been kept in tip-top shape with Mercedes antifreeze and Bar's Leaks, and I really just don't think the car's ever been even remotely abused, so perhaps it's got a while to go! Les says the ETB is the "newer" style, so hopefully I'm okay there. The blower motor does make the occasional squeak at low speeds when it's been on for a while... and the heater core is original, so I suspect that'll be the first big-ticket item I have to replace. Also, there are no fault codes whatsoever - for that I consider myself a very lucky 9000 owner ;)
I could easily spend a huge whack of money replacing all the items that *should* be going/have gone at this mileage, but since there are no symptoms, why bother? There are a number of cosmetic issues that could be taken care of (front bumper/spoiler is in nasty shape, lots of rock chips on the hood, wheels could really use a refinish), but at this point I think I'll wait until after all the big-ticket items happen to do that stuff. With my luck, I'll take care of all the cosmetic stuff, then all the mechanical stuff will go right after!
The only work I've done is change the upper rad hose which burst, and after that I flushed/refilled the cooling system. I did get a SRS code a few days after getting the car, but after having my indie clear it, it hasn't come back. *knock on wood*
All in all, I'm stupidly happy with the car. The price I paid is the sweet, sweet icing on the cake.
The transacion with Les was a dream. He was completely honest and forthcoming regarding every last detail of the car. I couldn't have asked for a smoother transaction.
So, how long have you had your Aero, Peter?
Apologies for the rant *grin*
