97 9000 audio/speaker problem

This is the radio/tape only (clarion?) head unit with remote clarion cd changer in a 97 9000 cs.

The front driverside speaker has a weak signal. It sometimes appears normal for a few minutes at a time, but mostly is low level output. I removed the cover and the driver/cone is in good shape and is working, but the signal level is very low compared to overall volume setting. There's no popping or other "bad connection" type of noise. It just gets loud (normal) all of a sudden for a few minutes, but mostly stays too low. The sound isn't distorted and the other three speakers are normal. I've played around with the fade and balance .... all is normal except that I have to overcompensate for the front-left ... except for those few minutes at a time of "normal" that occur for maybe 10 minutes out of every couple hours of playing time.

I've read that the tweeter is wired through the speaker ... could it be shorting and loading down the 4" speaker? .. or do I blame the head unit?

Am I correct in understanding that the rear speakers are powered by the under-passenger seat amp and the front is powered by the head unit?

Are there sources for schematics? .... the only owners manual I can find is for the pre-GM years, so I don't know if the audio is the same as in a 94.
