thought I would mention the interesting things that can be done with Saab engines. Your comments are spot on I think with the 10:1 comment.
Here is some very interesting info on what can be attained on a turbo engine...at 8.75:1:
Brad on the Perf board is doing some brow raising things. He is very much a master tech and an expert on stuff like this, but he fiddles with a NA distributor on his turbo car. His results, with water injection, were quite impressive. Basically he played with a mechanical advance distributor..... increased mechanical advance range and adjusted spring tension on the advance so that advance started a little sooner and advance a little more. Timing was 23btdc idle 13btdc max boost boost and 21btdc by 5000rpm. With ater injection.

I would be scared to even TRY that. But it did get me playing with what I have and with all my modifications I am able to get nice performance out of only 4 degrees retard total in like .15 degrees per psi increments. at 20btdc at idle and around 16btdc at max boost. The car really is alive at this setting...>BUT one has to be carefull. I havea whole new FI setup and water injection kicking in at 5psi, and 8:75:1 compression, down from 9:1. Incredible power can be had doing what Brad did at quite low boost. A couple swedes have 300hp in their 2.0L engines at only 1 bar of boost! BIG turbo, high flowing head, etc....but stock cams actually;-)

now, if 944s wanten to make what he has reliable, water injection may help.
