Not a good idea to test the BPC that way...

that could wreak havoc with the ECU.

Best way to test the BPC (APC) solenoid is to remove the 'W' hose (the middle one) and then go for a drive. BE CAREFUL, as this will cause the wastgate function not to operate and could damage the turbo if you hit over-boost. If you notice that the gauge approaches and stays within the red area, then you know it is something related to the BPC operation. This doesn't mean it's the BPC itself; it could be other conditions causing the ECU to send a signal to the BPC to open the wastegate. These conditions could be knock, O2 sensor, vaccuum leak, DI cassette, etc.

Another option to try after doing the above would be to clean the BPC. This helps *sometimes*, but usually you will need a new BPC later on anyway. To clean the BPC, there are differing opinions on this. Some people use electrical cleaner, while others use carb/choke cleaner. There's been some pros and cons about using WD-40, so it's best to search the archives on this procedure.

When was the last time you changed the plugs? Are they NGK BCPR7ES? Correct gap (1.00mm to 1.10mm)? How about the fuel filter? Have you tested the BPV (try sucking on the vaccuum hose going into the top of it: little to no resistance means it's shot)?
