Some questions before starting the head gasket...

This is for the 93CSET with 140k mi. Has a great dealer service record up to 120k mi, then I took over.
I've done the HG on a 91 before, so I'm pretty familiar with the job, but there are some minor differences.
For one, this car makes no chain noise at 140kmi. That in itself is a little weird, but if the chains are quiet, should I just let them be, or should I go after changing them no matter what?
Second, the HG only has a little leak at the tranny/exhaust end. Does the head always need to be ground when it comes off? If the HG is giving up to the outside and compression is still good, what are the chances that the head is still smooth?
Finally, I checked Quasi's site for write up on the timing cover R&R, but there aren't any pics with it. Are there any other write ups or pics of that part of the job anyplace else?
Thanks in advance!!
Patrick
