A/C compressor question : Sanden vs. Seiko Seiki ?

I'm trying to improve the performance of my car's A/C, and am curious if there's any difference in performance between the Sanden compressors (installed up to '92) and the Seiko Seiki units (93 and up)?
My '92 9kt has the Sanden unit in it, but has been converted to R134a. I've noticed that when the car is idling in traffic, A/C is pretty weak. If I clutch in and rev the motor to about 2000 rpm, cooling improves quite a bit.
I'm just guessing, but it seems to me that since the sanden unit was designed for R12, it might not be ideally suited for the job once converted (perhaps the optimal compression ratio for R12 is different than for R134a ?). But then again, the Seiko units might equally suck... If I swap out compressors, would I have to swap out evaporator units as well?
How good is the A/C on the later 9000's anyway?
