get one for either of my daughters (who also love them). At least not if they will be 1200 miles away, especially the one who is mechanically challenged. They are superb cars, but need an attentive owner.
OTOH, if the car you get has RECENTLY had the typical problem areas dealt with AND there is a reliable indie near the school you might be OK. Just budget for stuff to go south and go over the car yourself at every opportunity.
Automotive reality (especially for younger drivers), though, says you and your son might be better off in something less prone to having "issues."
Toyota or Honda are safe bets.
So is an old Volvo, which you already are familiar with.
Or just get him a Taurus. Cheap to buy, repairs are reasonable (unless it needs a tranny). Can be all but ignored and still run fine. Safer IMHO than a Japanese car, too.
