of course the Alt light comes on whenever the alternator isn't running and the key is on. If the alt light came on while the car was running, your alternator/ volgate regulator/ belt may fail. However, I assume you have a serpentine belt and the ALT light went off when you got it started. Did the car overheat?
How much fuel was in the tank? Has it run out of gas at any time before, or is there a chance that you ran out this time? Driving on a hill with little fuel in the tank can starve the pump and stall...even though you still have perhaps a gallon sitting in the back of the tank. The fact that you were able to start it again and get it home makes me think you ran it low on gas or your fuel pump is failing.
Many don't realize that the fuel pump is lubricated and cooled by fuel. Running low on fuel or running out of fuel will lead to premature failure of a fuel pump.
Will need more information to be of more help.
Good luck
David
