Engine knock, more like a bang, after head gasket repl

I replaced timing chain and balance chains, and inevitably, the head gasket. The left end of the engine runs quiet, but now there is a mechanical knocking on the right side. It randomly varies in intensity with engine revving (with rather abrupt and wild pedal inputs.)
I put a dummy plug in each cylinder, and heard no change in the noise. I noticed upon removing the head earlier, that piston #3 had two small clean areas on the front and rear of the piston top.
Theory 1: bad wrist pin in #3 which allows upward piston movement to contact head. The new head gasket is adding to the interference.
Theory 2: the exhaust balance shaft is bad
Theory 3: foreign material. (I didn't drop anything into the head. The cylinders are clear.)
Theory 4: a piece of the broken timing chain guide is lodged in the oil pan.
Any thoughts to minimize the engine teardown?
