Does Red Antifreeze Always Stay That Color?

When I replaced my '93 Aero's coolant, I just drained the system but did not flush it. Actually did this twice, each time refilling with Red anti-corrosion, long-life(phosphorous free) antifreeze.
My question is: The color of the coolant in the expansion tank is greenish. Does the red stuff eventually change color? Todd from eEuro told me that if there were any of the old coolant remaining in the system, it doesn't mix with the red stuff and is likely floating on top of the red stuff. It also smells like typical antifreeze; the red stuff isn't supposed to have an odor, right?
All of this has to do with my monitoring my heater core to be sure it's not leaking. Once in a while, I get a little bit of antifreeze smell in the car, although once the AC system gets going, the faint smell goes away. I'm worried that I damaged the new heater core when I installed it late last year and am hopeful I don't have to do the job AGAIN!
TIA!
