Red antifreeze should stay red, but as you noted, any residual green stuff will take awhile to work out of the various nooks and crannies in the block, etc. I would unequivocably NOT worry about that.

Without a true flush (even with one) it's highly likely that some remains of the old coolant will be in evidence later on. As long as your temp readings are ok, you're in good shape.

As to the faint antifreeze smell, I'd think that although you probably wiped away the trace amounts of green stuff from around the heater core, that there's still a vestige of it on the sheetmetal around there, which will become fragrant when heated. I wouldn't worry about the core itself unless you see your reservoir dropping AND eliminate the many other common leakage areas.

The green antifreeze smell in the reservoir makes perfect sense in that the remains of it are floating on top, and that the reservoir is probably permanently impregnated with its smell after many years of contact with it.

I would not advise you to do anything about it as long as the car drives as it should.
