Ok, I am stumped...
The other day I noticed that the vacuum hose connection to my PCV valve was cracked and barely holding together. I decided to get some white plumbing tape to seal it and then cover it with electrical tape before going out to buy new hosing and a new valve.
Started the car and it had a massive pressure buildup in the crankcase and then I heard a loud pop.
Now my idle is shot to hell.
Found that my little job of using plumbing tape had inadvertantly completely blocked the valve.. very smart!
I had figured that the pop was the valve cover seal being blown after the pressure buildup, so I had that redone. And of course installed a new pcv valve and hosing.
However, the car will barely idle and isn't smooth until it is over 1500rpm. Below this speed, it pretty much dies unless the throttle is held open. When you do just hold it open, it just barely stays until a pop is hear somewhere around the intake and then the engine races up to 2000rpm or so without changing the throttle position.
I take it that blocking the PCV valve had also ruptured my intake manifold gasket... and this is causing strange air pressure problems and the popping sound that occurs about every 5-10s at that v rough idle.
However, after checking my spark plugs, I find that they are black and carbon fouled (no oil), indicating a very rich mixture.... I would have figured that a intake gasket leak would lead to lean mixture if anything.
Before I change that gasket... does anyone know if a gasket leak can be the sole cause of this sort of problem? Or is something else playing up as well?
Thanks for any ideas.
