Gavin-
I pulled the speaker grille yesterday after reading your post and have an easier method than you suggested for R&R the LED. Haven't done it yet, but will this weekend.

Unscrew and remove the grille, gently pull out the LED and you have the LED and wires in your hand.
Strip back the plastic/rubbber insulation around the LED holder and test your new LED (and the circuit!) by touching the LED leads to the now exposed wires on the old LED. The new LED should flash. If not, swap the polarity and try again. Note which lead on the LED goes to which wire ( blue and black on my 96CSE). Polarity matters to LEDs.
Make up 2 pieces of wire 4" - 6" long (about 18 gauge, I think) and solder or twist-splice to LED leads. You may wind up trimming the LED ends to make them shorter and easier to work with. You may want to shrink-tube this connection.
Cut the old LED off the existing wires from the car.
Splice the new wires with the LED on the end to the old, watching your polarity.
Test the circuit by arming the system.
Tape or shrink tube the splices.
Put the new LED into the hole in the speaker grille. A 5mm Radio Shak LED is a perfect fit if the black holder is still intact.
Reinstall grille.
Should take about 30-45 mins total, with no extra parts needing removal.
