You are one of the SAABers I had in mind when I finally passed the vehicle inspection yesterday. Although your suggestion didn't exactly help, your recommendations were appreciated.
On the Volvo, I first tried replacing the plugs. Then I replaced complete exhaust from the header down. The exhaust was nearly due in any case. That's when I replaced the O2 sensor with one from Ford. Next I replaced the sensor with a generic Bosch. Friday before fourth of July I replaced the generic Bosch with the oem.
I think the generic Bosch is the same as the oem (also by Bosch). The look the same to me. Except the oem has wires and connectors, for $60 to $70 more.
Almost two years ago I used a generic Bosch to pass NJ NOx emissions for my 94 cs turbo by splicing wires. Although it is still has a CEL on (6 glashes).
My other 94 9k cs failes the same inspections with, again, high NOx last month. I replaced the O2 sensor with a generic Bosch to no avail. I suspect I may not have made good enough connections. I succeeded only in my second attempt splicing on my 94 cs turbo two years ago.
The Volvo was so far behind inspections I was looking to go back in October (four months) on a two year inspection regiment. The gave me a sticker good till October, 2005. Total cost spent in getting it passed is about $700 to $800. This is parts only. My labor is of course free.
The Volvo still have one more problem. The speedo died. I replaced the speedo pick-up on the differential. Wrong guess. Will get a used instrument cluster on ebay next.
